After a bustling few days at the Hillhead show, it's been wonderful to reflect on the incredible industry we are part of. I haven't spoken to so many people in a long time, and it was delightful to see such a great turnout at the IQ and MPQC stand, along with our partner organisations. It was a pleasure to catch up with old colleagues and friends.
The show is primarily an excellent platform for the industry to explore the latest technological advancements in our sector's supply chain. However, it also serves as a fantastic opportunity for our community to unite, benefiting both seasoned professionals and newcomers alike.
Hosting the study tour for the Institute of Quarrying Australia (IQA) was a highlight, as they were amazed by Hillhead's scale and the industry's passion in the UK. Additionally, seeing strong support from many companies for the Minerals Matter School tour on Thursday was heartening, introducing a new generation of potential talent to our sector.
Events like Hillhead prove that we work in a vibrant, forward-looking sector and must ensure we are prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Throughout the summer months, several branches have taken a well-deserved break, including organising member social events. However, preparations are well underway for the new season of activities starting in September. The Health & Safety CPD days, covering key topics such as health, safety, well-being, new technologies, and sustainability, will be announced soon. I urge members to engage with these events and their local branches, as they provide excellent CPD and networking opportunities.
As we look forward to the second half of 2024, the IQ remains committed to supporting the industry and its members. The IQ Board will conduct a strategic review and develop a five-year plan for the organisation, extending to 2030. As we navigate a rapidly changing world, there will be opportunities for members and the wider industry to provide feedback on what they want from IQ.
The upcoming months will also see IQ Board elections, and I encourage members to participate in the election process. My involvement with the Institute over the years has been rewarding, allowing me to give back and help guide our organisation’s direction. The nomination process will soon be available online, with more information on the roles and the process itself.
On a personal note, it is with a heavy heart that I must report the untimely passing of Dawn Cook. Dawn dedicated 40 years working for Tarmac, including five years as my personal assistant and most recently worked at the Tarmac Skills Park. Throughout her career, she supported numerous young managers, many of whom now hold senior positions in the industry. In a fitting tribute, the National Skills Park has renamed their Annual Best Apprentice Award in her honour. She will be deeply missed by all.
